What to say

At the start of the call
Before we start, I'd like to record this call so I can take accurate notes. Is that okay with you?
In the invite
This call may be recorded for note-taking. If you would rather it was not, tell me before we start and I will not record it.

The short answer

A call recording consent checker tells you whether you need permission before recording a sales call. Pick where you and the other person are, and this tool applies the stricter of the two rules, explains it in plain words and gives you a script to ask for consent. It is general information, not legal advice.

Who it is for

Sellers, founders and managers who record calls, or are about to, and want a clear answer before they press the button.

How it works

  1. Pick both locations

Choose where you are and where the other person is. A call crosses borders more often than it seems.

  2. See the stricter rule

When the two sides follow different laws, the stricter one is the safe one. The tool picks it and says why.

  3. Copy the script

Get one line to say at the start of the call and one line for the meeting invite, ready to paste.

Frequently asked questions

  • It depends on where each person is. In one-party places you can record a call you are on. In all-party places everyone must agree. When the two sides are in different places, following the stricter rule is the safe choice.

  • In a one-party place, one person on the call, which can be you, is enough to make a recording lawful. In an all-party place, every person on the call must agree before the recording starts.

  • California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington are the states most often listed. Connecticut and Michigan are often treated the same way. Laws change, so check before you rely on a list.

  • Say that you want to record, say why, and ask for a clear yes. For example, "I'd like to record this call so I can take accurate notes. Is that okay with you?" If anyone says no, do not record.

  • No. It is general information to help you ask the right question. Laws change, exceptions apply and your facts matter, so check with a lawyer before you build a process on it.
