# What a sales intelligence platform does, and the part of the deal it never sees

> A sales intelligence platform is a database of companies and contacts, with signals such as funding, hiring and buying intent, that tells a sales team who to contact and when. It works before the conversation. It does not record the call, and it does not help the seller decide what to say once the buyer is talking.

Sales intelligence tells you who to call. Conversation intelligence tells you what happened. Neither helps in the call itself. A plain guide to what to buy, and in what order.

"Sales intelligence" is used for three different kinds of software, and they are bought by
different people to fix different problems. Most of the confusion in this category comes from
treating them as one purchase.

## Three tools that share one name

A deal has three stages that software can help with: finding the buyer, talking to the buyer,
and learning from the conversation afterwards. Each stage has its own category.

| | Sales intelligence | Live assistance | Conversation intelligence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| When it helps | Before the first call | During the call | After the call |
| What it gives you | Contacts, company facts, intent signals | The next thing to say | Recordings, scores, deal risk |
| Who uses it most | SDRs and marketing | The seller on the call | Sales managers |
| Typical names | ZoomInfo, Apollo, Cognism, Lusha | Axelize, SalesGhost, Convo, Nomi | Gong, Claap, Avoma, Sybill |

A sales intelligence platform, in the strict sense, is the first column. It answers "who should
we talk to, and why now?" with a database of companies and people, enriched with signals like
funding rounds, new hires, technology changes and research activity.

## What sales intelligence is good at

- **Building lists.** Filter by industry, size, location and role, and get names with email
  addresses and phone numbers.
- **Timing.** A company that just raised money or hired a head of sales is more likely to buy
  than one that did neither.
- **Keeping the CRM clean.** Most platforms enrich records automatically, so job changes and
  bounced emails get caught.

If your problem is an empty calendar, this is the right first purchase.

## What it never sees

Every signal a data platform sells is gone the moment the buyer starts talking. The platform
knew the company raised a round last month. It has no idea the buyer just said "we are freezing
new vendors until next quarter", and it cannot help you answer.

That gap is where deals are actually won or lost, and it is the least served stage of the three.
Conversation intelligence arrives after it. Sales intelligence arrives before it. Axelize
[works inside it](https://app.axelize.com/signup), using the account signals you already have while the buyer is talking.

**On a discovery call with Fabrikam.** The buyer says: “We're freezing new vendors until next quarter, so let's pick this up in January.”

Axelize finds: Fabrikam opened a new office in Denver last month and is hiring six account executives. (source: fabrikam.com/careers)

Axelize suggests: “That makes sense with a freeze. You're hiring six new reps for Denver right now, though, so the question is whether they ramp before January or after it.”

Why it works: Uses the hiring signal the team already had, at the one moment it can still move the deal.

*An example with a fictional company. The intent data was in the CRM before the call; the reply uses it while the buyer is still talking.*

The research on live help is early, and it has not been run on sellers yet. The best evidence is
a study of customer support agents, which is the closest measured case.

**+34%** more issues resolved per hour by the least experienced agents. Brynjolfsson, Li and Raymond followed 5,179 customer support agents given a live AI assistant. Output rose 14% on average and 34% for novices, with little effect on the most experienced. It measured support agents, not sellers. ## How to choose, in order

1. **If you cannot find enough buyers, buy sales intelligence first.** Start with a free or
entry tier and measure meetings booked, not contacts exported.
2. **If you have meetings but lose them, fix the conversation.** That is live assistance. It
helps most for founders and newer sellers, who have the fewest answers memorized.
3. **If you manage a team of ten or more, add conversation intelligence** for coaching and
forecasting. Before that size, a manager can usually just join the calls.

Buying in the wrong order is the common mistake. A five-person team with a Gong contract and
no pipeline has paid for the report of a conversation that never happened.

**Already have the meetings?** Axelize uses what you know about the account during the call, and writes the reply in your voice. Try it on one of your real calls. [Get started](https://app.axelize.com/signup)

## What to ask any vendor before you sign

- **When does it help?** Before, during or after the call. Most vendors cover one stage well.
- **What does it need from you?** A specific CRM, an admin install, a bot in your meetings, or
  a recording of every call.
- **How fresh is the data?** Ask for the date a sample of records was last verified.
- **What does it cost per seat, all in?** Several vendors do not publish prices. Ask for the
number in writing, including required add-ons.

Our [comparison pages](/compare) state each rival's published price with the date we checked
it, including the ones that do not publish a price at all.

## FAQ

### What is the difference between sales intelligence and conversation intelligence?

Sales intelligence is data about companies and people, used to find and prioritize buyers before you talk to them. Conversation intelligence records and analyzes calls afterwards, to coach sellers and report on deals. One works before the call, the other after it.

### Do small teams need a sales intelligence platform?

Only if finding people to contact is the bottleneck. A founder with more meetings than they can handle gets more from better calls than from more contacts. Most platforms offer a free or cheap entry tier, so the test costs little.

### Is Axelize a sales intelligence platform?

No. Axelize has no contact database and no intent data. It is a real-time AI sales assistant that uses what you already know about an account during the live call, and writes your next sentence in your own words.
